How to Unblock Your Sacral Chakra

We all go through phases where we lose our creative mojo and sexual desire. Sometimes things just feel a little ‘meh’ and we’re not exactly sure why. For those of us with a little spiritual edge, working with the sacral chakra is an incredible way to tap into, open and heal your creative and sexual energy. Let’s explain how:

    What are the Chakras?

The 7 chakras are the main energy centres of the body. Each has a certain location on the body, resonates at a different solfeggio frequency and is responsible for regulating particular emotions. When your chakras are in alignment, you feel balanced, healthy and generally have good mental health. When they’re blocked, they wreak havoc both on the mental and physical body.

    What is the Sacral Chakra?

The sacral chakra is the second chakra in the body and is the major driver of passion, pleasure, joy, reproduction and creativity. It’s located at the lower abdomen, below the naval which is why it plays a vital role in the physical condition of your reproductive organs, large intestines, kidneys and bladder. It’s responsible for regulating emotion relating to creativity, passion and sexual energy.

    Open Sacral Chakra Symptoms:

    Signs of a healthy sacral chakra are comfort in your sexuality, feeling abundantly creative and having a general passion for life. You will experience a lust and passion for life. Symptoms of an open sacral chakra include;

    • Balanced sex life
    • Ease with intimacy
    • Comfort with your sexual identity
    • Confidence in your body
    • Passion for life
    • Feeling creative
    • Finding joy in creativity and hobbies
    • Feeling deep connection with your sexual energy

    Is My Sacral Chakra Blocked?

Are you generally feeling disconnected and drained, both creatively and sexually? This is a major sign that you may be experiencing a blockage in the sacral chakra. When there is an imbalance in this chakra the symptoms are generally two-fold; either it is under-active or overactive.

Signs of an Under-active Sacral Chakra

    • Lack of sexual drive
    • Lack of creative energy
    • Difficulty receiving pleasure
    • Feeling passionless
    • Disconnection from yourself and others
    • Sexual repression or shame
    • Fatigue
    • Excessive fantasising
    • Isolation

Signs of an Overactive Sacral Chakra

    • Sexual Addiction
    • Creative highs followed by burnout
    • Feeling consumed by emotion
    • Codependence
    • Obsessive behaviour
    • Short temper
    • Jealousy
    • Controlling or aggressive behaviour

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, you’re not alone. Many of us go through creative and sexual lulls, but there are ways to reawaken this stagnant energy.

How to Heal the Sacral Chakra

    1. Chakra Breathwork

    Practicing breathwork while focusing on the sacral chakra is a powerful technique to achieve healing and balance. Be ready to potentially unearth repressed feelings and experience a surge of emotion in the form of wailing or crying. The following practice is a mouth breathing chakra breathwork exercise, each breath should be of equal length, forming a triangular pattern;

    1. Find some private time to be alone (phone on silent)
    2. Set a timer on your phone for 5 minutes for your first practice (ensure the alarm is gentle)
    3. Lie down flat on the floor with your spine straight (no pillows)
    4. Close your eyes
    5. Take a moment to settle into this state
    6. Focus on the area of the sacral chakra, below the naval
    7. Breathe into the mouth and into the belly
    8. Without a pause, breathe a second time in through the mouth and into the chest
    9. Exhale through the mouth with an audible sigh
    10. Repeat for 5 minutes
    11. When the alarm sounds lay in this new feeling for as 5 more minutes or whenever you’re ready

This breathwork pattern can be quite difficult and challenging in the beginning. It is important to persevere with the breath for as long as you can. The depth of your breath will determine how powerful this experience will be; the deeper the breath the deeper the experience. If you are feeling lightheaded or dizzy at any point, please stop the practice. We recommend listening to music in the solfeggio frequency of 417hz to make this even more profound.

    2. Affirmations

Practicing sacral chakra affirmations is a powerful practice for opening and healing this centre. The blockages in this chakra are mostly due to trauma in the subconscious mind. By using sacral chakra affirmations, you will start to reprogram your subconscious mind by feeding the brain new information.

For example; if your dominant subconscious thought is “I am not desirable” or “I am creatively drained”  then the part of your mind that is on autopilot will continue to feed you these messages, sabotaging your sacral health.

By reframing that thought with an affirmation like “I am worthy of pleasure” or “I am creatively abundant” you’re sending new signals to the brain that will help to open and heal the sacral chakra.

    3. Dancing & Hip Opening Yoga

Yep, we’re saying you can twerk to help open your sacral chakra. Dancing is a powerful way to unblock this energy centre as movements particularly from the hips like; twerking, shaking your butt, hip circles and body roles will help to connect you with your sexual energy.

Practicing poses that help to open up this centre can be a powerful way to unblock and balance this chakra. Start with some simple yoga poses like; frog pose, squat pose, butterfly pose, cobra pose and goddess pose.

Try to focus on the area of the sacral chakra as you do this pose, breathe deeply and hold each pose for 30 seconds. You should feel a connection to sexual and creative energy.

    4. Sacral Chakra Shadow Prompts & Journaling

Writing your thoughts down on paper is a more powerful practice than people realise. Sometimes our minds are so jumbled up that it’s hard to make sense of how we actually feel.

    You can journal in one of two ways; let your feelings out on paper and allow your thoughts to flow out of you without even thinking or ask yourself some questions in the form of shadow prompts. Here are some sacral chakra shadow prompts to get you started;

    1. What fuels my creative passion? What do I love doing more than anything?
    2. What’s a creative passion that I dropped and miss doing?
    3. What’s a creative activity that I can make time to do once a week?
    4. What’s something new I can practise to get my creative juices flowing?
    5. When is the last time I felt sexually desired? Why did I feel desired?
    6. What makes me feel in touch with my body?
    7. What makes me feel confident and passionate?
    8. When’s the last time I felt free, had fun and let go? How do I experience that again?

    Final Thoughts

We all go through creative and sexual lulls. Even after opening our sacral chakra once, it can close back up time and time again, but that’s okay! Thankfully there are techniques that we can practice to heal this chakra and get back in touch with our passion, desire and joy. If you’re experiencing symptoms of a blocked sacral chakra, merely your awareness of it is an amazing step.

You’ve already taken the time to realise that there is an issue you need to work on, now it’s just about putting in the work! Like anything, opening and healing your chakras takes time, practice and patience, but the results are an overall more fulfilling creative and sexual life.
